Becoming
2019
Acrylic on Canvas
18×12 inches
“Becoming” was painted during a time when I was rediscovering my identity. I had recently lost my home, my business, my family, and everything attached to these parts of my life. I had to abandon the story of my past in order to rewrite this internal story and rediscover my authentic self as something new.
The main figure in this painting is a woman, self, or identity positioned as unborn fetus. Shadowed behind her is the great world dragon, coiled and consuming his tail. The juxtaposition of these figures is meant to show the strength and power inherent in the process of destruction and creation. Overlying the image is the form of the sacred spiral, representative of the cycle of rebirth and the unbroken link between the macrocosm and the microcosm. The sacred spiral is also historically connected to the figure of a mother goddess and associated with structures interpreted as symbolic wombs.
